A Few Insider Tips for Navigating the City Like a Local!

Although the Czech Republic has been listed as the 6th safest country in the World, when visiting Prague, it’s important to be aware of a few practical considerations to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. There are some things you should be cautious about.

1. Pickpocketing

Pickpocketing is common in busy tourist spots, particularly in places like Old Town Square, Charles Bridge, and on crowded trams. Be especially vigilant when in crowded areas. Keep your belongings safe in your pockets.
2. Currency Exchange

Avoid changing money at tourist exchange offices that offer poor rates. Look for official exchange counters or use ATMs (preferably ones located inside banks) for better rates.
3. Taxis

Avoid Street Taxis: Unlicensed taxis can charge you higher rates. Always use a reliable taxi service app, such as Uber or Bolt. If you need a taxi, it’s often safer to pre-book one, either through an app or via a hotel or restaurant.
4. Public Transportation

Tickets Are Required: You must have a valid ticket for public transportation, whether you're taking the metro, trams, or buses. Fines for traveling without a ticket can be steep (usually around 1000 CZK or more). Tickets are available from vending machines at the metro entrances, or in the trams, and can be purchased by card.

Ticket Validation: Remember to validate your ticket before you board, especially on trams. A failure to validate can result in a fine.
5. Czech Currency (CZK)

The Czech Republic uses the Czech koruna (CZK), not the euro (though some places in Prague may accept euros). It’s best to withdraw CZK from an ATM or exchange your currency at a proper exchange office.

Be mindful of places that accept euro payments lower than regular rates. Spending Czech koruna is recommended. (1 euro = 25 CZK roughly)

Credit Cards: Credit cards are widely accepted, especially in major restaurants, hotels, and stores. However, smaller businesses or some nightlife attractions might only accept cash or may have a minimum charge for card payments.
